چکیده

We present a summary of our previous investigations of the physical and chemical structure of the Horsehead nebula, and discuss how these studies led to advances on the understanding of the impact of FUV radiation on the structure of dense interstellar clouds. Specific molecular tracers can be used to isolate different environments, that are more sensitive to changes in the FUV radiation or density than the classical tracers of molecular gas : the CO isotopologues or the dust (sub)millimeter continuum emission. They include the HCO or CCH radicals for the FUV illuminated interfaces, or the molecular ions HCO, DCO and other deuterated species (DNC, DCN) for the cold dense core. We discuss future prospects in the context of Herschel and ALMA.

Are PAHs precursors of small hydrocarbons in Photo–Dissociation Regions? The Horsehead case

We present maps at high spatial and spectral resolution in emission lines of CCH, c-C3H2, C4H, CO and CO of the edge of the Horsehead nebula obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). The edge of the Horsehead nebula is a one-dimensional Photo–Dissociation Region (PDR) viewed almost edge-on. All hydrocarbons are detected at high signal–to–noise ratio in the PDR where intense emiss...

Hydrocarbon anions in interstellar clouds and circumstellar envelopes

The recent detection of the hydrocarbon anion C6H − in the interstellar medium has led us to investigate the synthesis of hydrocarbon anions in a variety of interstellar and circumstellar environments. We find that the anion/neutral abundance ratio can be quite large, on the order of at least a few percent, once the neutral has more than five carbon atoms. Detailed modeling shows that the colum...

Density structure of the Horsehead nebula photo-dissociation region

We present high angular resolution images of the H2 1-0 S(1) line emission obtained with the Son of ISAAC (SOFI) at the New Technology Telescope (NTT) of the Horsehead nebula. These observations are analysed in combination with Hα line emission, aromatic dust, CO and dust continuum emissions. The Horsehead nebula illuminated by the O9.5V star σ Ori (χ ∼ 60) presents a typical photodissociation ...

Chemical complexity in the horsehead photodissociation region.

The interstellar medium is known to be chemically complex. Organic molecules with up to 11 atoms have been detected in the interstellar medium, and are believed to be formed on the ices around dust grains. The ices can be released into the gas-phase either through thermal desorption, when a newly formed star heats the medium around it and completely evaporates the ices; or through non-thermal d...

Sulfur chemistry in the Horsehead An interferometric view of the Horsehead PDR

Sulfur is an abundant element which remains undepleted in diffuse interstellar gas (AV < 1) but it is traditionally assumed to deplete on dust grains at higher densities and larger AV . Photodissociation regions (PDRs) are an interesting intermediate medium between translucent and dark clouds where the chemistry and energetics are dominated by the illuminating FUV radiation field. Thus they can...
